MATTAPOISETT MUSEUM
&
CARRIAGE HOUSE

Museum Historical Note:  The Christian Church, in which the Museum is housed, was built in 1821 and was the second meeting house to be built in what is now called Mattapoisett.  It was in this meeting house that Mattapoisett residents approved the vote to separate from the town of Rochester.  The meeting house has served various denominations over the years, the longest being the Baptist Church.

The Museum & Carriage House focus on the following displays:
Main
1st floor - Maritime related exhibits
Balcony - Main Bldg. - Children's items & furniture
Connector - Native American artifacts
Carriage House - 18th & 19th century life

Interior view - Meeting House (Museum)

During summer months pews are covered to provide additional display surface for the various exhibits (see photo below).

The Museum of the Mattapoisett Historical Society is dedicated to the preservation of significant articles from the past which demonstrate the life and culture of this old New England village prior to the changes wrought by the great wars of this country.
A notable collection of antique farming equipment is supplemented by the restoration of a complete blacksmith shop.  One may also see and appreciate the many tools and implements used for tilling the fields, planting and harvesting the crops, logging and sawing timber, cutting and storing ice plus all the other manifold tasks making up old time life on the farm.

Victorian period parlor furniture

Colonial life is represented by a fine collection of papers, books as well as weapons and other artifacts from this fascinating period.  There are some handsome period furniture pieces and other memorabilia from the early 19th century when the town was famed for shipbuilding activities.  Whaling ships built in Mattapoisett sailed the seven seas and brought back wondrous articles from around the world.  Many of these articles are on permanent display in the Museum.

Among the permanent displays:
                                                The Blacksmith Shop
                                                Weaving & Spinning Exhibit
                                                The 1890 Kitchen
                                                Salt Works Model
                                                Carpenter Shop
