The Bark Platina (launched in 1847) was built here and it captured the only white whale ever taken.

Whaling ship ACUSHNET built in 1840 by G. Barstow & Son - on her maiden voyage carried Herman Melville, who immortalized the whaling saga in his work " MOBY DICK".

A beautiful Clipper Ship called the "GAY HEAD" was launched here on July 29, 1852 from the yard of Wilson Barstow in Mattapoisett.  The ship was about 400 tons in weight and her worker's "half model" used to develop her lines is now in the Mattapoisett Historical Society Museum.

Mattapoisett was the most famous whaleship building port in the world. The list of known vessels built here is over 300.
