Whaling ship ACUSHNET
built in 1840 by G. Barstow & Son - on her maiden voyage carried
Herman Melville, who immortalized the whaling saga in his work " MOBY
DICK". |

A beautiful Clipper Ship called the
"GAY HEAD" was launched here on July 29, 1852 from
the yard of Wilson Barstow in Mattapoisett. The ship was about 400
tons in weight and her worker's "half model" used to develop her
lines is now in the Mattapoisett Historical Society Museum. |

Mattapoisett was the most famous
whaleship building port in the world. The list of known vessels built here
is over 300. |
