Historical Society
 | The Mattapoisett
Historical Society, Inc. is a non-profit organization established to foster and
maintain interest in the history of the town and the region of which it is a part, and to
encourage educational and cultural activities.

 | HOURS OF OPERATION:
Summer 2007 hours: July 2 - August 31, Wednesday - Saturday
1:00-4:00pm
The Museum & Carriage House is open to the public during July and August,
Wednesday - Saturday, 1:00PM - 4:00 PM.
Admission - $ 3.00 / Adult, Children ( 6-16) / $ 1.00, Children under 6 years of
age, free.
Group Tours and special visits by appointment.
Historical Society Members and guests have free admission to the Museum and its programs.
Fall & Winter Hours: Museum Curator will be available Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday
9:00 - 12:00

 | COLLECTION
POLICIES:
a. The Mattapoisett Historical
Society shall, through donations or
purchases, actively collect artifacts which
illustrate the settlement,
history and growth of the town of Mattapoisett.
b. Objects and materials collected must be historically significant and
relevant to the stated purpose of the Society as set
forth in the By-Laws.
c. Objects and materials must be dated, identified, catalogued and fully
documented to the fullest extent as soon as possible
after receipt of
same.

 | ACQUISITION POLICIES:
It is the policy of the Mattapoisett Historical Society to Collect:
1. Objects created, used and/or produced in the town or similar to
objects
known to have been created and/or used in town.
2. Material which deals with Mattapoisett, its people, its history, in
particular and that of the surrounding area.
3. Objects, including tools and equipment which are typical examples of
their kind, thereby serving to illustrate or document
lifestyles, customs,
occupations or trades of the people of Mattapoisett
at various time
periods.

The Society
does not provide an appraisal or select an appraiser for a
donor.
Additions
to the collection may be in the form of a gift or a loan.
In
either case, the appropriate "gift " or "
loan " document must be executed.
It shall be the responsibility of the Museum's Curator to accept or reject
additions to the collection. Should the need arise, the Curator
may request
approval or denial from the Board of Directors.
 | DEACCESSION:
This is the permanent removal of an object from the collection. Objects
removed must either have no local historical value in the manufacture,
origin, or use; or must be in such poor condition that they can no longer be
exhibited or be available for study.
The Society will deaccess by sale or auction anonymously unless otherwise
mandated by the Board of Directors. Proceeds from the sale of
deaccessed items shall go into the Society's funds to be used for
acquisitions, conservation of objects or special needs related to the
collection.
Deaccessions are recommended by the Curator. No deaccession shall take
place without thorough investigation by any titles or other extenuating
circumstances.

 | LOAN POLICIES:
Outgoing Loans: The Board of Directors shall approve all loans of objects to other
institutions. The condition of the object and environmental conditions of the
borrowing institution are to be taken into consideration.
The borrower must provide insurance suitable to the Board of Directors. Objects not
owned outright by the Society are not loaned without permission of the the
owners.

Incoming Loans: It shall be the responsibility of them Society to arrange
insurance coverage for loans to the Society.
Loan Forms: Loan forms must include the following information:
1. Length of loan
2. Condition of item(s)
at time of delivery and return
3. Appropriate
insurance coverage
4. Signatures of both
parties
